Eli is moving to BC!

Yep, its true – our cellist Eli Bender is moving to BC. Fortunately there is one day left where all 3 of us are in Toronto, so we’re doing a last minute show at the Tranzac THIS TUESDAY June 23!

Its not the end of the Shoeless, but it’ll be some time before we play again.

We’ll be playing our entire repertoire from 8-10pm. Hope to see you there for this last Shoeless show!

Before summer kicks in and The Shoeless go their separate ways for a while, join us at Musideum for an evening of new repertoire mixed in with favourites from our recent album (released October 2014). We will also do a couple of Soozi Schlanger originals in Shoeless style, with Miss Soozi on vocals!

“Few bands on the local or national scene can top The Shoeless when it comes to combining the kind of freewheeling spontaneity and improvisational skills that is at the heart of traditional music with the kind of of jaw-dropping accuracy and attention to detail that one finds in the best chamber music.”
– Dominique Denis (Music critic, À bon verre, bonne table magazine)

“…a breath of fresh air and another fine example of a new generation rejuvenating an old tradition.” -David Olds (Wholenote Magazine)

A New Year, a New Website!

Well, The Shoeless may be off doing other non-Shoeless things right now, but that doesn’t mean we’ve disappeared! A new year calls for a website makeover, does it not? Check out a bunch of new photos taken by the amazing Carlos Garate, and this wonderful drawing from one of our recent shows made by Kathryn Durst!

Much thanks for your support in 2014, especially with the release of our new CD (available here!). Looking forward to more coming up in 2015 … (In the works for 2015 – some summer festivals and a Canadian tour including Home Routes house concerts!)

Yay!

A huge THANK-YOU to our hometown crowd who came out and supported us at our CD release on October 5, you all made it a fantastic show! From the first note of Pressgang Mutiny, to Soozi Schlanger’s opening set, to the last note of Frank’s last waltz was well over two and a half hours; that’s not Wagner but still not for the faint of heart. Also thanks to our hosts of our house concerts in Ottawa and Montreal, and the Sleepless Goat for having us in Kingston.

PWYC, late slot on Thursdays in the Front Room (Tiki room on Jan 9)

January 9 with THE BOXCAR BOYS *tiki room* 10pm

www.theboxcarboys.ca
The Boxcar Boys deliver a veritable gumbo of wild gypsy, Dixieland jazz, Klezmer, and folk music performed with a good time New Orleans spirit.

January 16 with VENTANAS *front room* 10pm

www.ventanasmusic.com

Ventanas weaves in and out of upbeat Bulgarian dance tunes, Greek, Lebanese, Turkish, Ukrainian and Sephardic love songs and heart-wrenching Flamenco palos, leading captive audiences through windows into other lands and cultures.

January 23 Eh?! (no Shoeless today! 2 sets of Eh)

www.ehtunes.com

Eh?! is a fiddle-based trio of Emilyn Stam, James Stephens and Anne Lederman. Solidly rooted in traditional styles, Eh?! is dedicated to bridging the gap between traditional and contemporary Canadian folk music. Think of it as music with deep roots, soaring branches and birds leaving the nest, heading for distant horizons.

January 30 with HALE AND HEARTY and FRIENDS OF MARKOS

www.haleandheartymusic.com

Founded in Florida between a tide pool and a motel parking lot and forged into rag tag reality in a garage in Parkdale. Hale and Hearty is the newest musical duo playing everything from ancient folk tunes to newly composed works, from the Appalachian Mountains to the Islands of the Pacific.

Friends of Markos: Conny Nowe, Rachel Melas and friends playing traditional Greek music!

We’re excited to be hosting Thursdays at the Tranzac in January! We’ll be there January 9, 16, and 30th, and will have a different guest band sharing the bill with us every week. Come on out at 10pm on Brunswick Ave in Toronto!
